Although we strongly believe that parents know best - one of our most commonly heard phrases is unfortunately: “I don’t think sports or exercise is suitable for our child”.
We also believe that by developing a programme that accommodates their individual challenges, and taking the time to understand their personal motivations - every student will be able to develop from the health benefits of sports and exercise. We split the health benefits of exercise into 2 sections:
“The physical health improvements that exercise brings”
1. Improved Mobility:
Some individuals with SEN/D are less effective at controlling and changing their body position as compared to others. Our programmes, specifically our exercise programmes have a strong focus on building muscular strength and endurance, developing skeletal stability and joint function as well as developing neuromuscular synchronization.
2. Weight Loss and Cardiovascular Health:
Often individuals with SEN/D are prone to being overweight. This can be due to a reduced metabolism caused by their condition, sedentary lifestyles, preference for energy-dense food or a side effect of medication. We have developed easy to understand exercise programmes that are appropriate for SEN students’ at any developmental level which make the process of weight loss and the resulting increase in cardiovascular health enjoyable.
3. Hand-eye Coordination and Gross motor skills:
Individuals with SEN/D often experience global developmental delays which can affect their hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills. Sports are a great way for students to develop these skills. Our adapted sports classes develop our students coordination through fun and easy to understand activities with clear goals to develop strong positive feedback loops.
“The mental health and behavioural improvements of exercise”
1. Social Skills development:
For any individual, a key element of playing sports and taking part in sports lessons is social skills development. From sports we learn to work as a team, to communicate effectively, to play within the rules and to follow instructions. Within our classes we set firm expectations on the students and positive behaviour within the classes is reinforced. We aim to develop a mutual respect between the students of the class and the coaches.
2. Self confidence and motivation development:
Sports are also a great way of developing self confidence. Pushing yourself through an exercise or a challenge is a great way of developing self motivation. Both of these benefits are reinforced through our students achieving their developmentally appropriate goals which are positively reinforced by the coach.
3. Mood and sleep regulation:
Often individuals with SEN may have issues with emotional regulation (i.e. they may struggle to redirect their energy/emotions or may struggle with inhibitory control). All of our programmes provide a safe and constructive outlet for our students to expend their energy. After their children have attended our classes - parents have reported that students are more regulated at home and develop positive sleeping patterns.
